Making Cold Brew Coffee at Home Tips
Here are some tips for making cold brew coffee at home:
- forget the expensive beans (honestly, I’ve never noticed much of a difference between my moderately priced ground coffee & more expensive varieties. My only suggestion would be to go a step above Folgers level coffee)
- let the coffee step for a solid 24 hours! You get the best bang for your buck this way (as in more caffeine)
- steep at room temp (I have found that the best flavors come from steeping on my counter vs. in the fridge)
- use a glass pitcher with a lid like this one from target! (this will help keep your cold brew fresh AND this pitcher lid has a strainer opening to avoid any accidental leftover coffee grounds from getting into your drink)
- use a coarsely ground coffee (supposedly this leads to better extraction & flavor)

How to Make Inexpensive Cold Brew Coffee with Cheesecloth
Cold Brew Coffee with Cheesecloth

Ingredients
- Glass pitcher
- Reusable cheesecloth bag
- Coarsely ground coffee
- Room temp water
Instructions
- In the cheesecloth bag, add 1 cup of ground coffee for every 4 cups of water
- Close up the bag & tie shut
- Hold the bag in the pitcher like you would a tea bag with the strings holding it up on the outside of the pitcher
- Pour in the water just as you would with a teabag to the very top of your pitcher
- Cover the pitcher with the lid and place it on your countertop for 24 hours (12 at a minimum)
- After 24 hours, remove the bag from the pitcher and slowly strain out any remaining liquid from the bag into the pitcher
- Easily toss grounds into the garbage by turning the cheesecloth bag inside out
- Enjoy your cold brew over ice with some milk + your favorite flavors
- Store in the fridge
BONUS RECIPE: Vanilla Sweet Cream
The best addition to cold brew in my opinion is flavored sweet cream (think Starbucks). All you have to do to make it is add equal parts milk + heavy whipping cream and then the flavor of your choice. That could be vanilla syrup, caramel syrup, peppermint, mocha– the options are endless!
