Hot summers can be tough.
Especially with a new baby!
Something that I have been having a hard time with is keeping babies cool during the recent heat waves here in the PNW.
I didn’t prepare much for the heat. I didn’t think anything of it! But that first 85 degree day in our two story home was brutal.
I think I had one fan going downstairs, and come nap time I realized the twins bedroom was CRAZY hot. I stripped them down and put the fan in there to cool it off and then tried putting them down again.
NOPE.
It was still way too warm for anyone to sleep in there. The worst part about the whole situation was that it was time for their late afternoon nap and when that nap gets missed, all hell breaks loose.
It is only about a 45 minute nap, but they cannot hang without it. So in a desperate attempt to buy myself some time, I made them each a cool bottle and ran upstairs to take apart their beds.
My goal was to get their cribs into my bedroom, as a huge tree keeps it shaded and cool. Again, didn’t plan any of this out.
Anyways, their cribs wouldn’t fit through the door so I needed to take them apart as well as take my own bed apart to make room. Well this took a crazy amount of time, as you can imagine. In the heat of my second story. With, at this point, exhausted screaming babies downstairs.
I have never lost it as hard as I did in that moment.
I was completely clueless as to what to do. They were screaming, I was dripping in sweat trying to hurry, and it just wasn’t happening. I ended up calling my mom and asking for help. Like any new mom does.
She had a stock pile of great tips for me in keeping babies cool that she had gathered from life with my sister and I. I was finally able to pull myself together. And got the babies to calm down.
I ended up getting one pack and play set up in my room, laid a crib mattress on the floor, and called it good. I laid upstairs with the babies and tried to get the room as cool as possible with wet rags for them to chew on and my safe place (How I Met Your Mother) on the TV.
After that day I did a ton of Pinterest browsing searching for the best ways to keep babies (specifically twins) cool during the summer! I have molded everything that I have found into my own methods and want to share with you guys my tips for keeping babies cool during the summer!

Keep chewables in the freezer
Anything cold to chew on will be a blessing on the hot summer days approaching. Keep rags, teethers and frozen waffles in the freezer for a quick cool down.

Forget the clothes
When it is hot out, do you really want to be wearing clothes? Well unfortunately we have to. But our babies don’t! I have been keeping the twins in diapers and thats it. When we do need to leave the house, I stick to a light onesie or romper like the ones below:

Focus on one room
This is a great tip my mom shared with me! Pick one room in the house to keep cool in order to save money and your sanity. Getting the whole house cool during a heat wave is nearly impossible. I choose our master bedroom, where the babies cribs now are, and have set up shop in there. I have even created an impromptu blogging station with my night stand and a foot stool!

Save yourself with bath seats
These bad boys are a GOD SEND with twins. I found some online that have suction cups on the bottom to keep baby extra secure while splashing in the cool water. They are also great for shallow kiddie pools or even keeping baby seated while they gnaw on their frozen teethers.

Keep the car in check
The car can get hot super quick whether you are in it or not. Make sure to get your AC serviced, and tint your windows if need be. There are also window clings you can purchase that will shade the windows for cheap. Also make sure to keep car seats free of any blankets and that if you are still using an infant seat the cover is set all the way back. Heat will accumulate inside of the infant seats.

Invest in a sunshade
I love park playdates, but most parks are all grass and no shade. The first time I brought my sunshade with me to the park, I didn’t even want to leave! It makes for a great space for baby to eat or sleep, even the whole family can sit under the shade. I highly recommend purchasing one!

When in doubt, get out
My last piece of advice is to abandon the coop. Get out of the house. Go to Target, the mall, an indoor play place- just get out of the house! Public places are generally kept pretty cool! If you are brave, take baby to the movies! The dark rooms are always kept pretty cool! If you need some help getting out with twins, check out my two posts, spending the day out with twins, and tips for getting out the door with twins.

Oh man I wish my hubs was up for a freezing house! He hates when I have the fans turned on!
