Moms and Mental Health
Let me guess. You always put your mental health on the back burner as a busy mom, right?
I knew it.
I was like that for a very long time until I had a lightbulb moment where I realized that if I wanted to be the mom I wanted to be for my kids that I needed to change something.
And by changing something, I decided it was time to take care of myself because of that old saying “you can’t pour from an empty cup”.
We’ve all heard it a million times but it never stuck until one day I was losing my mind and realized that I could not be a good parent without making sure my own needs are met.
That meant I desperately needed to take care of my mental health.
About six months prior to my realization I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder and that was a wild ride. It took a while for my meds to get sorted out and for them to start actually helping me. During that time period, life was a mess. Or more so, I was a mess.
I didn’t have a good therapist at the time so I didn’t know how to help myself. I was also stuck inside of an abusive marriage that I couldn’t find a way out of until March 2020 at the start of the pandemic.
March is when I decided it was time to begin caring for myself for real this time if I wanted to truly be the best parent and person I could be and that involved leaving my kids dad and starting fresh.
I dove into weekly/sometimes twice a week therapy, took my medication seriously, and began a truly transformational personal growth journey.
I became an entirely new person. I didn’t even realize how miserable I was before I started on the journey. My therapist pointed it out in one of our first sessions and before that, I had no clue.
But it hit hard and while I was working on myself and working toward the light on the other side I started to really see just how deep of a pit I was in.
Putting My Mental Health First
Putting my mental health above all else not only made me a better person, but it made me a much better parent. I yell a lot less. I lose my shit a lot less. I know when I need to step away and I DO. I know when I need to refill my cup and I’ve worked it into my everyday life.
Putting my mental health first changed everything for me and I know it will do the same for you too which is why I wanted to compile a list of my best mental health tips for moms inside of one post.
