When I first started planning the twins birthday party, I was overwhelmed with ideas.
I was only sure of one thing; that I wanted it to be a unique first birthday party.
My husband and I were throwing around ideas one day and that is how we came up with it. A pizza party theme.
I can’t remember who shouted it out, but I do remember hopping right onto Pinterest to check out what they had to offer. There was nothing.
There were a few ideas for a general pizza party, but not a pizza party first birthday. It was almost too much of a unique first birthday party! That is why I chose to stick with it. I liked the idea of doing something different. Not your standard mermaid, unicorn or wild one birthday party. I absolutely loved the pizza party first birthday idea!
It was also a plus that it could easily be a gender neutral party. I mean, who doesn’t like pizza?! Perfect for my boy girl twins Kendall and Caeden.
The only downside that came with the unique party idea was just that. It was UNIQUE. So not a whole lot of ideas to run off of! That is ultimately why I decided to document the party. So I could share the idea for everyone else! It was such a cute, cheap and laid back first birthday party. I totally recommend!
First thing that came with party planning was diving into the decorations.
I ended up finding some red and white plaid plates and napkins so that is where the color scheme came from! I figured red, white and gold were pretty solid “pizza themed” colors!
I scored the plates and napkins on clearence at Fred Meyers, however these ones are pretty similar off of Amazon!
Then I stopped by my local dollar tree to snag the rest of the decorations!
I grabbed some streamers, tissue paper decorations, tables clothes cups and utensils. I also ordered ‘party’ letter balloons but I cannot for the life of me find them online anywhere!
Something that I could not find (cheap) was a pizza banner. So my friends and I actually worked together to draw out little pizzas to hang along with the decorations. I hung them with mini clothespins like these.
The last decoration was actually gifted by a friend. She gifted us two of these ‘one’ banners
You could, however, totally recreate the banner yourself and not pay $8 for it!
When it came time for set up, I decided on creating two accent walls.
One over the food table, and the other where the twins would be seated for presents and cake!
I ended up with this accent wall above the food table.
I thought that the little pizza slices looked adorable clipped onto the pom pom banner from the dollar tree! And then the party balloons just tied the entire thing together. One thing I wish I would have done is purchased an extra table cloth so that I could have pinned that up behind everything and given a red or gold background.
Then the accent wall behind the twins turned out like this:
I ended up sticking that #1 balloon on there after finding it from our first birthday photoshoot. I think it made the pictures really pop though! In all of the close up pictures opening presents and mashing on cake, it clearly shows that it is their first birthday.
Like the decorations, I kept the food pretty simple as well.
I stuck with a green salad, chips, fruit and of course- PIZZA.
At first I was thinking I would go more full out “pinterest mom”, however, keeping it easy was simply easier on myself. I stuck with foods that I wouldn’t mind having extras of and that didn’t take long to prepare. I did, however, bake and decorate the cakes and cupcakes for the party.
If you didn’t know this about me already, I am a professional cake decorator! I actually make cakes for friends and family in my spare time. It is my favorite hobby! But even so, I kept the cakes and cupcakes simple.
I stuck with funfetti cakes for the twins smash cakes and decorated them with rosettes and then the cupcakes were a rich chocolate with creamy whipped frosting. Obviously I made my favorites for my own kids party! I did go a liiiittle extra and make up little fondant pizzas that I sliced up before I let them dry and then topped the cupcakes and cakes with them!
For being as simple as they were, I really enjoyed how they turned out!
I really enjoyed how the entire party turned out. It was very laid back, at my own house, and everyone had a great time. Even the twins! They woke up right before the party started, so they were ready to go the whole time! They had .enough energy to play, open presents, eat pizza and devour their smash cakes.
I think that the smash cakes were my favorite part of their unique first birthday party!
What are you thinking of doing for your littles first birthday party? Pizza party? Space party? Dog party? Something different? I would love to hear! I think a unique first birthday party is a super fun idea!
But if you want to keep it simple and order everything in one place and forget about it, check out my first birthday shop page on Amazon. It is filled with some adorable themed gear! Unicorn, Mermaid, Wild One, and more!
