I will be the first to admit that falling in love with your best friend is scary as hell. Everything changes once you notice those feelings. There is no way to backtrack and rid yourself of them.
I tried. Oh, did I try.
When I first fell for my best friend, they didn’t feel the same, and let me tell you, that hurt. Oh man did it hurt. But I did what any crazy girl would do and built a wall around those feelings because I didn’t want to lose my best friend. And it worked for about nine months until my best friend became really quiet one day while I was talking about a date I had planned.
Usually, they would ask questions and get excited with me, but this time was different. They shut down. Like, non-verbal, staring at the ground shut down. Part of me wondered if it was because they had feelings for me but I didn’t want to get my hopes up. I mean, what would come from that? I didn’t feel that way anymore.
Or so I thought.
After what felt like an hour of silence sitting in my dark living room with Netflix paused I finally grew the courage to ask. I asked them if they liked me. After a long pause, they said yes.
I thought my own feelings for them were gone. I sat there in disbelief. There is no way this could be happening. That led to a very confusing few weeks for us. We didn’t want to risk ruining our friendship, even though we both already knew the feelings between us would ruin it regardless if we didn’t do anything about them. So we gave dating a try. It was messy at first. Going from best friends to romantic partners was a tough transition. We didn’t think we would work out.
But then we did and it was magical. Being in love with your best friend is the best feeling in the world. Having that base as best friends is what I think has really allowed our relationship to grow. We already knew each other inside and out and by dating we have reached a whole new level.
