Baby led weaning can be rough in the beginning.
The hardest part about it that I found was finding baby led weaning dinners for the whole family.
For the first couple months, I really just went between a few different meals for the twins and often just made my husband and I something else. Noodles, breakfast and baked veggies for the most part.
Or I wouldn’t think about what the twins would eat and they’d end up fussy for food and I’d run around the kitchen trying to figure out something for them.
But once I really got it down, I realized just how easy baby led weaning is. And ultimately what the whole point of it is!
If you’re new to baby led weaning, I would for sure do some research on the topic to make sure you’re ready for it. It’s a lot different than the old school 1st stage, 2nd stage and 3rd stage solids.
Instead, BLW dives right into real foods. With caution, of course. You still need to start with a few basics and work your way into meals from there in order to watch for allergies. I think our first foods were avocado, banana, and sweet potatoes.
I have some info on our baby led weaning journey in this post (click here) that also includes some must haves for baby led weaning.
But in this post, I am going to share an entire month of baby led weaning dinners for the whole family.
Before we get started with the list, I want to give you a few pointers in regard to BLW friendly foods:
- Make sure they’re soft(ish) foods. Test them in your own mouth first. Can you ‘chew’ it with your tongue?
- What about size? Is it small, but big enough that if they swallowed it whole they would choke (ie. blueberries, grapes)? I generally cut potential hazards in half, or long strips that they can hold and take bites off of (like watermelon).
- Remember allergies. If you have any allergies, mention them to your pediatrician. My pediatrician suggested us waiting until their year old appointment before trying tropical fruits because my husband is allergic.
- Gagging is totally normal. This is the scary part of BLW, but it’ll be okay. Caeden likes to stuff all his food in his mouth and try to chew it. It doesn’t work. He gags (which sounds a lot like he is choking) a lot. But all it is, is their gag reflux coughing back up the food. He has always spit it back out (and put it right back in his mouth). But Kendall on the other hand has choked and I was able to easily scoop the chunk of food out of her throat. You would be surprised what mama mode makes you capable of. All in all, that gagging sound is totally normal, just keep an eye on them. Never walk away while they’re eating.
If you have any other questions in regard to baby led weaning, I would suggest doing your own research and coming to your own personal conclusion. I am not a doctor, just a twin mom who has successfully introduced her infants to real foods.

Doesn’t that sound easy?
That is a whole month of meals, all baby led weaning friendly, and likely things you already make often. Or maybe I gave you some new ideas to try for your family!
Either way, I hope this list makes BLW a little easier for you, as it should be! Baby led weaning is a fun (and messy) experience for the whole family. Don’t let it take over meal times!

Just wanted to drop a line and point your attention to an error in your post that poses a safety concern for someone who does not know any better. Choking is NOT normal. Gagging however is very normal. The two are very different.
Thanks for the meal ideas!
Lynneah says
Thank you for pointing that out! I will reword. And you are welcome! I hope you found something worth trying!
Megan says
How old were your babies when they were eating all of those things?
Lynneah says
We started introducing foods at 6 months, and by the time they were about 10/11 months they had eaten the majority of these things! I have a post all about introducing baby led weaning here >> https://twinsandcoffee.com/baby-led-weaning-twins-with-nuby/
Hope that helps!
Erin says
Love the ideas but just a word of caution if your baby is truly choking, then by American Heart guidelines, you should do back thrusts. Never try to remove the foreign body with a finger as it may push it deeper into the throat. I know those moments are super crazy and filled with adrenaline, but just be careful.

Hi Lynneah,
Do you add salt into your babes meals? Or cook everything rather bland for them and then season your portion? I’m so confused about the whole no salt or sugar until they are 12 months. Thank you
Chloe Williams says
I know I am a little late to the party, but I loved reading this post! Those are surely some great little recipes. Yummy. Thanks!
Lynneah says
Hi Zuz,
I didn’t add a lot of seasonings at first, but by 10 months was cooking all of their foods the same as my own. Hope that helps!
Lynneah says
Thank you for the suggestion! I am rewording the text as I have since been informed this information and want to be as helpful as possible. Thank you!
Alexis says
A lot of these seem incredibly unhealthy. As someone who was obese as an adolescent/teen/young adult due to being taught poor eating habits, I want to be careful with my sons. The biscuits, pizza, etc. seem super high in sodium, grease, and carbohydrates. I was hoping for more organic recipes for my twins. Oh well, random veggies for dinner it is again.
Lynneah says
Alexis, I apologize for the misleading title. When preparing dishes such as these for my twins and family, I do alter the recipes by including lower sodium/ fat free options, less salt and sugar, ect. These are more so starting points and ideas I found to be helpful while I began baby led weaning. I really appreciate your feedback! I hope you find what you are looking for.
Jennifer says
Thank you for all of your meal suggestions! I did not do baby lead weaning with my first so I am wanting to try it the second time around! It’s been a little challenging since she has the WORST gag reflux! So seeing all of these easy meals makes me happy to know it doesn’t have to be hard! Looking forward to trying some of these!
Lynneah says
Thank you Jennifer! I hope it helps!
Jessica says
These are great! Thank you!
How do you serve the grilled cheese? I’m worried my little one will struggle to “chew” it!
Lynneah says
Thank you so much! I actually cut it into long strips so that they could grip onto it and pretty much cooked the sandwich until the cheese melted a bit but the bread was still soft so their little gums could chew. I hope that helps!!

I was just looking for ideas for my baby. Until I came across this jewel of a comment. It’s 2yrs later but this made me laugh so hard. This is one of the most passive aggressive, pompous comments I’ve ever read. These are ideas she was kind enough to share if it’s not for you keep searching. Or be more specific in your search ORR… just don’t give them the carbs substitute with spaghetti squash… come on man your problem solving skills are trash. Some may not have the ability to give their little ones a plethora options. So you take what you can work with. Your problems aren’t everyone else’s problems keep that condescending attitude to yourself. THANK YOU Lynneah for the time you took to help others.
